Padres vs. Cardinals Betting Overview

The Padres got a great effort last night from Aaron Harang but the bats stayed silent as they have done most of the year. San Diego is 1-6 in their seven games of the homestand which has seen then bat .169 with eight runs scored. The Padres are 6-21 in their last 27 home games against a right-handed starter. The Cardinals has won 12 of their last 14 series and look to gain a sweep for the first time this year.

The Cardinals send Chris Carpenter to the mound with a 1-4 record and a 4.88 RA. In his last start he allowed three runs and nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks in just under 7 innings against the Royals. In his lifetime he is 3-2 in seven starts with a 3.12 ERA. The Cardinals are 3-12 in Carpenter’s last 15 starts. The Padres counter with Mat Latos on the hill with a 1-6 mark and a 4.60 ERA on the season. His last start saw him give up four runs in six innings with one walk and four strikeouts. San Diego is 3-13 in his last 16 starts and he is 0-2 lifetime with an astronomical 25.31 ERA against St Louis in his two career starts.

The Padres are 11 games under the .500 mark and are not hitting very well. Nick Hundley is about ready to come off the disabled list. The closer for the Padres has been one of the bright spot with Heath Bell but rumors abound about trading him to a contender. Ryan Ludwick has been hot and cold with the bat and the team struggled when they traded away Adrian Gonzalez. Alex Cintron announced his retirement on Tuesday. Cintron, who signed a minor league contract with the Padres on May 3, was hitting .350 in 60 at-bats for Triple-A Tucson.

The Cardinals are nursing some injuries but have found ways to win. Matt Holliday is out until Friday with a quad injury. In spite of this the Cardinals are 10 games over .500 and hold a 3.5 game lead over the Cincinnati Reds. The bullpen has struggled with Ryan Franklin and Miguel Batista having issues getting people out. Mitchell Boggs was sent to the minors to work on stretching out to possibly be a starting pitcher when he returns. Currently the Cardinals are 30-20 on the season and have had a revolving door on the infield. The emergence of Fernando Salas and Eduardo Sanchez decreased Boggs’ role in the bullpen, but he still figures prominently in the Cardinals’ plans. If he doesn’t return to St. Louis as a starter or long reliever, the Cardinals could trade him for organizational depth.

Our Cardinals vs. Padres Pick and Predictions

The Padres have been rather horrible with the bat most of the season. Cameron Maybin was hot for a few days early in the year and a few others but collectively they are in the last 5 in batting average in the majors.  Tony LaRussa has a tendency to play all his subs when they are already secured a series win. Look for the Cardinals and Carpenter to continue their winnings ways.

Our Pick: Cardinals -127
