Cubs vs. Astros Betting Overview

Last place is on the line in this three game series in the National League Central division. The Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros square off at Wrigley Field for a Memorial Day game. These teams have horrible pitching staffs so it will be interesting to see which one comes out on top.

Chicago acquired a journeyman pitcher to help bolster their staff and produce some wins. Rodrigo Lopez was picked up from the Braves after a disappointing season with the Diamondbacks where he won seven games and lost 16 in 2010. He had success in the AAA Braves organization with a 6-1 record and a 2.59 RA. He is 35 years old and broke in the major leagues in 2006. Houston is searching for answers by turning to Aneury Rodriguez with a 0-2 record and a 4.98 ERA. He has five starts this uear and nine relief appearances. In his last two starts he pitched just under 12 innings and allowed three runs. He pitched in relief against the Cubs earlier in the year and gave up two hits.

They used Doug Davis, Casey Coleman and James Russell to fill-in but had very little success. Aramis Ramirez helped the Cubs avoided the sweep over the weekend with a home run to win on Sunday 3-2. Ryan Dempster was able to bolster the staff with six strong innings. The Cubs did get Geovany Soto back from the disabled list after getting injured in the Cardinals series on May 10.

Houston Astros News and Betting Tips for Monday, May 30, 2011

The Astros are 19-34 on the season and are 8-17 on the road. Houston has the worst pitching staff in the National League. They have allowed 270 runs so far in 2011witha team ERA just above the Cubs.  They avoided the sweep over the weekend and were out-scored by a large margin. Sunday saw J.A. Happ hurl six innings and pitched well but the bullpen blew the game and they eventually succumbed 4-2. This season Houston has blown 12 saves and recorded only seven successfully.

Our Astros vs. Cubs Pick and Predictions

How do you choose between two pathetic pitching staffs? No matter how many tends you look at or how many runs teams allow, the Cubs appear to be a better team than Houston. With this being a game in Wrigley Field our bet will be with the Cubs but don’t expect Rodrigo Lopez to last long.

Our Pick: Cubs -131
