The 2011 Sony Open will be played at Waialae Course One at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii from January 13-16. This 18-hole course features over 7000 yards of spectacular beauty. One twist to this tourney is that the front and back nines are reversed for tournament play to utilize the sun’s power setting in the west. The national TV audience will see tailored greens, lush fairways and mountain ranges and azure ocean scenery. The purse for this tourney is $5.5 million with the winner receiving $990,000.In it 12 years of existence, it has had eleven winners. Only Ernie Els has been able to win twice at this event. In 2010, Ryan Palmer was the winner last year. Before we predict and pick a winner, let’s look at some of the top players in this event and few others to watch.
Ernie Els is a past two-time Sony winner (2003, 2004) has five career top 10’s here. He finished a disappointing T12 last year. At the Hyundai Tournament of Champions last week he tied for 12th. Els odds for this event come in at +1200. At 12/1 and a legit chance of winning this tournament again – Ernie Els might be a solid bet to win the 2011 Sony Open so don’t hesitate to pick him.
Jim Furyk was a winner at the Sony Open in 1996 and has 5-Top 5 finishes in its past history. Furyk is the reigning FedEx Cup champion. Furyk is listed with the same odds as Ernie Els at +1200 and might be a good place to lay down a small bet.
Steve Stricker has three top-four finishes in his last four starts at Waialae. Last week he faded to a tie for fourth place at Kapalua after sharing the 54-hole lead. He is ranked 30th on TOUR in 2010 in fairways hits, and 12th in putting. Many people believe this Sony Open is his for the taking. His odds are 8/1 or +800 which is a little generous. If you are looking for a “sure thing” this is as close as it comes. Stricker is the sexy pick in this tournament but there may be better options at 12/1 and greater.
K.J. Choi has five top 15s here, including a run of four straight that ended in 2009. An improved game with his putter in 2010 led to a rebound from a poor 2009, and will serve him well again this week. Choi won this tournament in 2008. Most sportsbooks have Choi listed at +2500 which we feel is a good bet.
Sony Open Darkhorse Picks and Predictions
Our predictions on some of the darkhorse players to be watched in the 2011 Sony Hawaii Open:
- John Senden (+5000) who has 8 top 15’s in his last 10. Senden led the PGA in green hits and was 3rd in ball striking.
- Joe Durant (field bet at +400) has always flourished at the course where he has four Top 20’s in last 13 starts at Waialae. In 2010 he was second in fairway hits and third in greens. If Joe gets hot putting this could be his day.
- Heath Slocum is listed at +5000 betting odds and has two Top 20’s in his last 3 starts on this course. He was 6th in fairway hits and 36th in ball strikes in 2010.
