2020 NBA Draft Betting Preview

2020 NBA Draft Betting Preview

The 2020 NBA Draft will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 18, but this time it will not be an in-person event. The NBA will be conducting a virtual event, similar to what the National Football League did in April.

The virtual components will take away from the experience quite a bit, especially for the players who have been waiting their entire life to get a chance to walk across that stage, but it will still be a memorable night for many. What won’t change is the amount of betting that will be done for the event, and the NBA Draft odds are updated and ready for action.

The NBA Draft is an extremely popular betting event, and there are many different ways to bet on the draft. Sportsbooks continue to develop new and innovative betting options as bettors continue to want in on the action.

The Minnesota Timberwolves currently hold the top overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, but it remains to be seen if they will actually make that selection. The Golden State Warriors are slated to pick second, but it’s anticipated several trades will be made before the event kicks off.

Once again, the draft class is loaded with terrific college prospects, as well as some of the top international players in the world. The draft will kick off the NBA offseason, but teams will be back on the court in a little over a month to kick off the 2020-21 year.

Odds to Go Number 1

The most popular bet on the NBA Draft each year is on which player will be selected with the number one overall pick. FanDuel Sportsbook has changed these odds numerous times since the NBA Draft Lottery, and there is now a new favorite at the top of the list.

According to FanDuel, LaMelo Ball has the best odds to be taken with the number one overall pick on Wednesday night, as his odds are now -210. Anthony Edwards was the favorite for several months following the COVID-19 hiatus, but he has now fallen to second with odds set at +115.

Here is a look at the rest of the Top 5 players with the best odds to be selected first overall, according to FanDuel:

  • James Wiseman +550
  • Deni Avidja +3300
  • Obi Toppin +6000

After this group, all of the remaining players listed at FanDuel have odds set at +10000 to be selected first overall. A major trade could change the odds once again, but these appear to be set before things kick off on Wednesday night.

Props and Match Bets

Outside of betting on which player will be taken with the number one overall pick, prop and match betting are two other ways to bet on the NBA Draft. There is much more that goes into this type of betting, but there is the potential to win some real money.

Match Betting features two different players, and you are making a bet on which player will be taken first. Here are three match betting options at FanDuel Sportsbook:

  • Anthony Edwards (-178) vs. James Wiseman (+138)
  • Deni Avidja (-225) vs. Obi Toppin (+172)
  • Onyeka Okongwu (-295) vs. Killian Hayes (+220)

Prop betting odds tend to put players in different categories and then allow the bettor to choose over/under how many players will get picked from each group. Other prop betting odds focus on the number of players from a specific conference who will be selected in the first round.

Here are two examples of these types of bets at FanDuel Sportsbook:

Number of Freshmen Drafted in the Top 10:

  • Over 4.5 +172
  • Under 4.5 -215

ACC Players Drafted in First Round:

  • Over 5.5 +440
  • Under 5.5 -650
