The College Football Playoff picture is wide open, and there’s plenty of intrigue heading into Week 4 with conference play in the spotlight once again. There have been upsets galore the first few weeks of the college football season and there could be many more brewing for this weekend’s action. We’ll take a look at a few games in particular that might be worth a wager or two:
Game of the Week
#4 Oklahoma Sooners @ West Virginia Mountaineers
Saturday, 7:30 PM ET
Odds: Sooners -11.5
The Mountaineers can’t be overlooked following a 10-point loss to Alabama in their opener and a win at Maryland last week. Clint Trickett threw for more than 500 yards last week, and while he won’t be able to move the ball as easily against the Sooners’ defense, he should still be able to spread it around and put up some points at home. An early lead will help the crowd get behind West Virginia as they try to rattle Oklahoma.
The Sooners are tough and very capable of beating the Mountaineers while in Oklahoma, but they are vulnerable on the road. West Virginia’s home-field advantage should help an underrated WVU team keep it close in a very entertaining game. A lot of people seem to agree as the Mountaineers opened at +11.5 and are now down to +7.5.
Pick: West Virginia Mountaineers +11.5
Underdog Play of the Week
No. 22 Clemson Tigers @ No. 1 Florida State Seminoles
Saturday, 8:00 PM ET
Odds: Florida State -20.5
The reigning national champion Seminoles are almost certain to make the College Football Playoff thanks to their relatively mediocre schedule in the ACC. Led by Heisman trophy winner Jameis Winston, Florida State should be able to move to 3-0 at home this week versus No. 22 Clemson, but both teams have been ranked in the Top 25 in each of the last three meetings, and the lower-ranked team has won twice. Still, the oddsmakers can’t seem to give the Tigers enough points to make the public think they can cover for this one.
A big part of the skepticism comes from Georgia blowing away Clemson in the opener. While the Tigers regained some confidence from their dominant win over South Carolina State, a lot of people know that Florida State is closer to Georgia than South Carolina State. That could mean another Tigers blowout loss. Both teams are coming off a bye week and while the Seminoles should win this game, it should be closer than expected.
Pick: Tigers +20.5
Two-Team Teaser of the Week (7 Pts.)
Miami Hurricanes @ Nebraska Cornhuskers
Utah Utes @ Michigan Wolverines
The Hurricanes are coming off back-to-back wins, but freshman Brad Kaaya has struggled with consistency. Hitting the road with a young quarterback is tough, so Miami will likely be overmatched against the undefeated Cornhuskers this weekend. The Cornhuskers enjoyed a 55-19 win at Fresno State last week after nearly losing at home to McNeese State the week before.
Meanwhile, the Utes are 2-0 and coming off a bye week, so it’ll really test Michigan’s defense. The Wolverines have had a rough start to the season, which included a 31-0 home loss to Notre Dame. Applying the seven-point tease makes Nebraska a pick at home and gives Utah a 14-point cushion in a game that could go down to the wire.
Pick: Utah +14 & Nebraska Pick
