The NCAA Tournament has announced it’s bracket, and we are ready to roll with some March Madness action. The first and second round games will be played Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This week, we are ready to give you our picks to advance to the Sweet 16.
In the South, the top seeded Virginia Cavaliers should be able to get through to the round of 16. They take on UMBC in the first round, and then either Creighton or Kansas State. We expect it to be Creighton. The Blue Jays will compete, but Virginia wins. The next quadrant seeds Kentucky and Arizona likely meeting in the second round. Wow, what a matchup. When push comes to shove – Arizona takes down Kentucky. The bottom half of the South sees Miami, Loyola, Tennessee and Wright State. Neither favorite is a huge favorite in this quadrant. If we had to put our money down, we would take the Hurricanes as the 6 seed to skate by Tennessee. Finally, out of the bottom – look for 10th seeded Texas to make a surprise visit to the Sweet 16. The Longhorns down Nevada, and then upset the Cincinnati Bearcats. Virginia, Arizona, Miami and Texas to the Sweet 16.
Out West – the Xavier Musketeers are the top seed, and will face quite a challenge in either Missouri or Florida State in the second round. With Missouri’s issues going on – look for Xavier to get to the Sweet 16. There they will likely see either the Gonzaga Bulldogs or the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State could be ripe for the picking of an upset, as they take on South Dakota State. Look for a first round upset there. In the end, Gonzaga gets back to the Sweet 16 to take on Xavier. In Wichita, Houston takes on San Diego State and Michigan battles Montana. This could be a situation where both underdogs win. That’s who we have. Then, at the bottom – the Tar Heels of North Carolina run away with the Charlotte quadrant. Xavier, Gonzaga, San Diego State and North Carolina go to Los Angeles.
The top seeded Villanova Wildcats go to Pittsburgh for their first two games. They should have no problem ending the season for either Virginia Tech or Alabama in the second round. When they get to Boston – they will take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Mountaineers will be tested by Murray State and then Wichita State, but Bob Huggins gets back to the Sweet 16. At the bottom in Dallas – look for Texas Tech to take care of Stephen F. Austin and then down the UCLA Bruins, who beat Florida in the first round. Finally, Arkansas beats Butler and Purdue smokes Cal State Fullerton. The Boilermakers avoid the upset and get to Boston. Villanova, West Virginia, Texas Tech and Purdue in the Sweet 16.
The Kansas Jayhawks are the top seed in this region. This could be the toughest of regions, and we will go straight chalk. Kansas takes out North Carolina State or Seton Hall in the second round. 4th seeded Auburn eliminates Clemson in the second round. Michigan State takes down the underdog Arizona State in Detroit, and the Oklahoma Sooners as the 10 seed battle, but fall the to 2nd seeded Duke Blue Devils in Pittsburgh. When the Midwest Region starts next week for the Sweet 16 in Omaha, the Kansas Jayhawks will take on the Auburn Tigers, and the Michigan State Spartans will battle against the Duke Blue Devils.
